Day 9 - Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Base Camp

Well today was to be the day we had walked all this way for, to visit Everest base camp.

Last night we were lucky enough to witness some kind of Nepali Festival. A bunch of guys singing and dancing at our tea house.  Two of these guys had masks on, one being a Freddie Krueger mask, the other an awesome wolves head!

So we started the day very early in Lobuche, the hike to Gorak Shep took around 3 hours through the snow.  It was pretty cold, I was all rugged up!

After some lunch we set off for base camp. There were a lot of people along the way. The trek took about 2.5 hours to get there walking alongside the massive Khumbu Glacier.

Base camp itself is marked by a few rocks and prayer flags. It was a great sense of achievement to finally get there.  Even Len managed to make it which was a massive given how much he has struggled along the way.  It was a remarkable achievement by all.

It was very very cold out there. I had 5 layers of clothing on top. We snapped a few photos (some with our Everest beer cans) and then set back off to Gorak Shep.

Saw roughly the spot where the Sherpas were killed by the Khumbu ice fall in April. Looks very dangerous indeed.

After a very long day, upon reflection I was ecstatic that we all made it.
