Queenstown - Big burgers and man overboard!

I’m sitting here looking out the window and the rain is falling yet again. That seems to be a bit of a theme on our stay at Queenstown, rain, sun, rain, sun…..rinse and repeat. Despite this weather we actually really love this town. We really like the alpine feel about it all and you can easily tell this is one of the places to be when visiting NZ.

Yesterday we did the Jetboating and Rafting. Up first was the Jetboating. This was pretty damn cool. The way the boat skips over only a few inches of water is unbelievable. You go through very tight canyons and you think you can hit one at any time. A little girl sat next to Kel, she couldn’t have been more than 6-7 years old and was terrified when the boat did the 360 degree turns. We got a little bit wet but it was worth it.

Next up was the Rafting. We packed into a bus for a 40 minute ride over Skippers Canyon. This trek was unbelievable. It’s a gravel road with vertical drops off the side of the bus. I said to Kel that I would find it hard to believe that back home tourists would be allowed to ride on such a dangerous road, but over here, that seems fine. We got to the rafting drop off point and the rain was falling hard and we were freezing. We broke off into groups of about 7 and there were around 8 rafts in total and off we went. It was pretty tame at the start as our guide Xander (an American from Colorado) was just teaching us the ropes. We then hit a rapid and I was sitting front left, the boat whacked a rock and off I went, straight into the river. I managed to grab a hold of the rope on the way down so I didn’t drift down the river. The water was actually pretty nice to be honest. Kel pulled me back into the boat and I was a little red faced, a few deep breaths and a laugh and off we went again. Some pretty cool rapids followed and we got very wet but you are kitted out in wetsuits and jackets so it’s not cold. We managed to see a bloke do the canyon bungy swing right above us. He was sitting on a plastic outdoor chair. Apparently you can pick all sorts of things to bungy off.

Last night we had to try out the Fergburgers as we were told by numerous people about them. The line was out the door and we waited about 40 minutes to get the burgers, I opened mine and my first words were “Holy shit”. You should have seen the size of this thing!! We managed to get them down (I don’t know how we did it!) and then went to a pub for a beer and called it a night.

Today we went up the gondola and had a ride on the luge. Not bad, unbelievable views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. Rest of the day has just been spent chilling out, literally, it’s SO cold here!

Tomorrow we head off for Milford Sound. We have actually organised a cruise there and will stay overnight on a boat. We can’t wait to get there as we’ve heard wonderful things about it. I doubt there will be Internet out there so will probably be back on line the following day.
