Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

Good morning all, I type this sitting outside overlooking Lake Tekapo. Low cloud cover, snow capped mountains in the background. What a morning!!

So yesterday we started the day with a short look around Christchurch. We actually went into the city and it was absolutely dead. Pretty much all blocked off. I have never seen so much temporary fencing in my life. The damage on some buildings was still noticable from the quake last year. We did however find a spot near the city that is a regeneration project of some shops in the city. They are using shipping containers which are painted nice bright colours. It really looks great and has a small community feel about it.

Then it was off on the road trip. We are making our way through to Mount Cook. Heading out of Christchurch was pretty much paddock after paddock but the mountains soon appear and it is spectacular countryside. The roads were fairly quiet so we got a good run. Stopped off at the Rakaia Gorge for a look, then into the small town of Geraldine which again was very nice. Lots of references to Talbot here!  We thought about staying there the night but ended up pushing on to Lake Tekapo. It was amazing to come down around the bend and see the turqoise lake view open up on you. I have never seen water the colour of it, truly epic.

Headed down to the Church of the Good Shephard to snap some photos and was lucky enough to see one of the best parking efforts I have ever seen (see the photo). I reckon a couple more seasons of training and they might get the hang of it. I probably wouldn't have awarded them even an encouragement award, a woeful effort if i am totally honest :)

So today we continue our road trip up to Mount Cook. Not sure what we will be doing there yet but looking forward to it!

  1. Trust Kel to be making friends with the local stray cats! Joey at least you're there to keep your eyes on the beautiful sights of New Zealand. Lovely to read of your travels. Enjoy you two.
